ISO 14001 is an international standard providing a framework for effective Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
The standard is adopted by organisations around the world to help them protect the physical environment around them whilst meeting their economic needs of today, and without damaging the ability of future generations to do the same.
Designed to help organisations achieve their own environmental objectives, as well as fulfilling environmental compliance obligations and enhancing environmental performance, the benefits of an ISO 14001 certified EMS may include:
- Cost savings through the reduction of waste and consumption.
- Protection of the environment through understanding and managing your ‘environmental aspects’ and ‘environmental impacts’.
- Confidence that government and industry compliance regulations are being met
- Improved brand image, gaining an advantage in winning new customers and retaining existing relationships.
- Increased employee satisfaction through enhanced environmental performance
- Protection against adverse environmental events on the organisation
Bywater has over 35 years’ experience in management systems and business improvement consultancy, and in that time we have supported organisations from a wide variety of industries in implementing, improving and maintaining their ISO 14001 environmental management systems. Our ISO 14001 consultancy and EMS support services include:
ISO 14001 Management Briefings are a great way to make informed decisions about implementing ISO 14001 before embarking on the certification process. These sessions can include an outline of the requirements ISO 14001:2015, its benefits and implications, and an appreciation of the steps involved in seeking ISO 14001 certification.
An initial step in the certification process is assessing an existing EMS against the requirements of ISO 14001:2015 in the form a gap analysis. The results of this assessment can be used as the basis for an ISO 14001 implementation plan.
In this stage of the process Bywater can support organisations by performing the gap analysis with an experienced consultant, or by assisting staff in performing it themselves. We also offer ISO 14001 implementation training courses which cover the requirements of ISO 14001:2015 and the process for performing this gap analysis.
Developing QMS Documentation
ISO 14001:2015 requires documentation of several areas, most notable of these are the scope of the EMS, the environmental policy and the environmental objectives, in addition to any documentation an organisation deems necessary to run an effective EMS.
Bywater can help organisations to develop EMS documentation and where necessary, incorporate legislative compliance. This can be achieved with as little or as much support from our consultants as needed. In addition to EMS documentation consultancy, we can support organisations in upskilling their workforce with training courses such as our process mapping course.
ISO 14001 Auditing
In order to maintain an effective ISO 14001:2015 EMS organisations are expected to perform regular internal audits.
As an IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment) approved training centre, we offer one of the largest ranges of IEMA Certified and IEMA Approved ISO 14001 training courses in the world with courses scheduled across the UK and available in-house.
We can support organisations with ISO 14001 auditor training courses, or we can perform regular audits of your EMS ourselves supported with reports and suggestions for improvement.
A pre-assessment audit takes place prior to a Certification Body audit in order to independently evaluate the compliance of an organisation’s EMS, both to ISO 14001:2015 and to the organisation’s own requirements.
Our ISO 14001 consultants can perform this pre-assessment audit for you, highlighting any nonconformities and working with you to take corrective action to support a successful certification audit.
Continually Improving the EMS
Continual improvement underpins ISO 14001:2015 and should be a core aim for all organisation that adopt this International Standard.
