The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), representing professionals globally, has seen a great deal of evolution in the environmental landscape in the 25 years of its existence.

With climate change a growing challenge to the planet, IEMA has been considering how best to support its 22,000 members into the future. With more professionals likely to join the group as environmental policies become ever more important, IEMA wants to ensure its mission is clear.

To that end, IEMA has been consulting with its membership and has confirmed how the sustainability and environmental profession is no longer on the fringes of the global economy. Today it is deeply integrated into the day-to-day workings of business, government and everyday life.

The research found that almost all members surveyed wanted to retain the purpose of IEMA as a professional body driving standards across the sustainability and environmental profession.

At the same time, members wanted IEMA to champion global sustainability professionals, careers and green skills.

One thought stood out – that with less than half feeling that the current name fully reflected IEMA’s mission, it was time for a re-evaluation of the institute’s name.

As a result, IEMA is changing its name to the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP). The rebranding will be taking place on 17th July 2025 and is intended to embrace changes to the institute’s purpose and mission.

As a leading IEMA-certified training provider, Bywater has provided environmental training to organisations in many industries.

On behalf of our clients, we have been keen to find out what the changes mean for those that have already received training and associated certificates.

Bywater directors, John Scott and Hannah Somner, recently met with IEMA’s Senior Training and Development Manager, Ed Brown, who reassured them the change will not have any impact on existing achievements.

He added that, even though there are no timelines yet, they are considering all their options to make the transition as streamlined as possible.

We are happy to report that the certificates you have achieved will continue to be valid, and that the name change will not affect memberships of the institute.

We will continue to share updates on the changes taking place. Join Bywater on LinkedIn for further information.
